I do get EV-DO (or broadband as Verizon calls it, yes) intermittently. I don't think any of y'all (I'm a Southerner, after all) use full-sized laptops much. On full-sized XP Pro, you do get pop-up advisories when your status changes. Yes, it does occasionally bounce down to 1x, but not often. Actually, my wheelchair is equipped with a Dell XPS Gen2/M170, the PC-Card, and a Motorola V60s. I too know about 1xRT. I used that for years before EV-DO. My point was that EV-DO depends heavily on the Venturi compression software to achieve its dazzling speed. You're pretty much screwed if yout data doesn't compress well. Yes, signal density is another big factor. I have some experience in two-way radio, and I don't think the general public even begins to grasp the complexity of what the celluar system is asked to do. The fact that we casually bop around with enough signal to do digital voice is stunning. Now we're starting to get broadband data rates. Holy guanno, Batman! It's truly astonishing. Alas, the one spot in my house where I spend most of my time is sort of a black hole for Verizon. :( Hey, to heck with the frozen North, ever consider a "Geek-Out" in sunny Houston? I bet I could give y'all serious competition for who has the most toys. Another idea: Have any of you thought of comparing the "speakerphone" feature on cell-phones.
